अयि गिरिनन्दिनि नन्दितमेदिनि विश्वविनोदिनि नन्दिनुते

गिरिवरविन्ध्यशिरोऽधिनिवासिनि विष्णुविलासिनि जिष्णुनुते ।

भगवति हे शितिकण्ठकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकुटुम्बिनि भूरिकृते

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१॥

 

ayi girinandini nanditamedini viśvavinodini nandinute

girivaravindhyaśiro'dhinivāsini viṣṇuvilāsini jiṣṇunute |

bhagavati he śitikaṇṭhakuṭumbini bhūrikuṭumbini bhūrikṛte

Salutations to the daughter of the mountain, who makes the whole world full of joy, for which the universe is a divine game and which is praised by Nandi,

who lives on the top of Vindhya, the best of the mountains, who makes Lord Vishnu happy (as his sister), who is praised by Lord Indra,

Oh Goddess, consort of the blue-throated Lord Shiva, who has many relationships (being the Cosmic Mother), who creates abundance.

सुरवरवर्षिणि दुर्धरधर्षिणि दुर्मुखमर्षिणि हर्षरते

त्रिभुवनपोषिणि शङ्करतोषिणि किल्बिषमोषिणि घोषरते

दनुजनिरोषिणि दितिसुतरोषिणि दुर्मदशोषिणि सिन्धुसुते

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥२॥

 

suravaravarṣiṇi durdharadharṣiṇi durmukhamarṣiṇi harṣarate

tribhuvanapoṣiṇi śaṅkaratoṣiṇi kilbiṣamoṣiṇi ghoṣarate

danujaniroṣiṇi ditisutaroṣiṇi durmadaśoṣiṇi sindhusute

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||2||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Who pours gifts on the Devas, who dominates the demon Durdhara, who tolerates the demon Durmukha and finally kills him and who is entranced in his own bliss,

who supports and nourishes the Three Worlds and delights Lord Shiva by taking away sins without sparing himself in the turmoil of battle,

who frees from the wrath of the Devana (generated by Danu), who is furious with the Daitya (sons of Diti) who annihilates the mad pride of demons and who is the daughter of the ocean (like Devi Lakshmi).

Salutations to the Mother of the universe, who is my Mother, who loves to live in the forest of Kadamba trees and delights with laughter and joy,

who lives in the center of the jewel in the highest peak of the Himalayas,

which is sweet as honey, which suffered the pride of the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, which destroyed the demons Madhu and Kaitabha by abandoning themselves in the din and turmoil of the great battle.

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||4||

 

Salutations to the conqueror of the enemy's elephants, who cuts their trunks and smashes their heads, reducing the headless bodies into hundreds of pieces,

whose lion fiercely tears the faces by tearing apart the power of the elephants of the enemies,

who knocks down the heads of the demons Chanda and Munda with his own armed arms and conquers enemy warriors.

अयि रणदुर्मद शत्रुवधोदित दुर्धरनिर्जर शक्तिभृते

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥५॥

Salutations to the Divine Mother who appeared to destroy arrogant demons in battle and who holds an unstoppable and indestructible power,

who made Lord Shiva his messenger, that Lord Shiva who stands out for his ingenuity in deliberation and who is the Lord of ghosts and goblins,

who is honored for refusing the demon's unwilling and ignorant messenger's (and therefore ending the demons themselves) proposal (to marry Shumba or Nishumba).

Salutations to the Divine Mother who forgave and gave refuge to valiant enemy soldiers when their wives were seeking refuge,

who with the trident in hand captures the heads of the heads (rulers) of the three worlds who oppose his trident,

whose victory gives rise to the Dumi-Dumi sound produced by the Deva's drums similar to the incessant flow of water that fills all directions with joy.

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥७॥

 

ayi nijahuṅkṛti mātranirākṛta dhūmravilocana dhūmraśate

samaraviśoṣita śoṇitabīja samudbhavaśoṇita bījalate |

śivaśivaśumbha niśumbhamahāhava tarpitabhūta piśācarate

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||7||

 

Salutations to the Divine Mother who reduced the demon Dhumralochana to ashes with her simple Humkara (sound).

Which drained the strength of the original demon Raktabija and Raktabija like him produced like a chain of reptiles (born of every drop of blood) during the battle,

whose great propitiatory sacrifice (resembling a Yaj˝a) of Shumba and Nishumba satisfied the ghosts and demons (who attend Lord Shiva).

कृतचतुरङ्ग बलक्षितिरङ्ग घटद्बहुरङ्ग रटद्बटुके

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥८॥

 

dhanuranuṣaṅga raṇakṣaṇasaṅga parisphuradaṅga naṭatkaṭake

kanakapiśaṅga pṛṣatkaniṣaṅga rasadbhaṭaśṛṅga hatābaṭuke |

kṛtacaturaṅga balakṣitiraṅga ghaṭadbahuraṅga raṭadbaṭuke

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||8||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Whose bracelet dances on his shining coat of arms following the movements of his bow during every moment of the battle,

whose golden arrows turn reddish (with blood) when they attack stupid enemies and kill them despite their screams and loud cries (flaunting vain pride),

which transforms by folding the four hosts (Chaturanga) of enemies that surround it from all sides during the battle, made up of many leaders of various colors who stupidly scream and shout (showing off their vain pride) in a game of decreasing strength.

सुरललना ततथेयि तथेयि कृताभिनयोदर नृत्यरते

कृत कुकुथः कुकुथो गडदादिकताल कुतूहल गानरते ।

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥९॥

kṛta kukuthaḥ kukutho gaḍadādikatāla kutūhala gānarate |

dhudhukuṭa dhukkuṭa dhiṃdhimita dhvani dhīra mṛdaṃga ninādarate

Salutations to the Divine Mother who is praised by the whole world; for which there are murmured prayers of victory before the battle and shouts of victory after the battle followed by the singing of Her Sthuti (praise).

Whose anklets jingling with the Jhana-Jhana sound fascinate Lord Shiva, the Lord of ghosts and goblins.

Who dances as half the body of Lord Shiva, where the male and female dancer (as the only body) are the protagonists of the cosmic game that takes place through the beautiful song (the divine sound of Nada).

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१२॥

 

sahitamahāhava mallamatallika mallitarallaka mallarate

viracitavallika pallikamallika jhillikabhillika vargavṛte |

śitakṛtaphulla samullasitāruṇa tallajapallava sallalite

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||12||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Who in the great battle against excellent wrestlers is accompanied by girls who appear delicate as jasmine who are fighting against the enemies.

Whose entourage is made up of girls from the Bheel tribe who are as delicate as plants from a jasmine village and buzz like a swarm of bees (or crickets).

aviralagaṇḍa galanmadamedura mattamataṅga jarājapate

tribhuvanabhuṣaṇa bhūtakalānidhi rūpapayonidhi rājasute |

ayi sudatījana lālasamānasa mohana manmatharājasute

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||13||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Who is intoxicating like a royal elephant from whose cheeks the Thick Mada (intoxicating) exudes incessantly (in the forms of Art, Beauty and Power).

Who is the daughter of the King from whom derive the treasures of art, beauty and power that are adornments of the three worlds.

Which is like the daughter of Manmatha (God of Love) who with a beautiful smile gives rise to desire and infatuation in the minds of women.

कमलदलामल कोमलकान्ति कलाकलितामल भाललते

सकलविलास कलानिलयक्रम केलिचलत्कल हंसकुले ।

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१४॥

 

 

kamaladalāmala komalakānti kalākalitāmala bhālalate

sakalavilāsa kalānilayakrama kelicalatkala haṃsakule |

alikulasaṅkula kuvalayamaṇḍala maulimiladbakulālikule

(Salutations to the Divine mother) On whose stainless, shining brow the delicate beauty of an immaculate and shining lotus petal is artistically arched.

Whose movement resembles games, soft movements of a flock of swans from which all schools of the arts have manifested themselves in succession.

Whose ornament and hair braids combine the beauty and sweetness of blue water full of lilies with swarms of bees and Bakula flowers infested with a swarm of bees.

करमुरलीरव वीजितकूजित लज्जितकोकिल मञ्जुमते

मिलितपुलिन्द मनोहरगुञ्जित रञ्जितशैल निकुञ्जगते ।

निजगणभूत महाशबरीगण सद्गुणसम्भृत केलितले

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१५॥

 

karamuralīrava vījitakūjita lajjitakokila ma˝jumate

militapulinda manoharagu˝jita ra˝jitaśaila niku˝jagate |

nijagaṇabhūta mahāśabarīgaṇa sadguṇasambhṛta kelitale

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||15||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Who creates in the hands the sound of the flute, which seems wet and monotonous, and exposes the cuckoo to shame through the beauty (of his voice)

when she hums heartthrob songs for the girls of the Pulinda tribe walking on the bright and colorful (due to blooming flowers) mountain ridge and plays with the women of her tribe who are full of good virtues.

जितकनकाचल मौलिमदोर्जित निर्भरकुञ्जर कुम्भकुचे

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१६॥

 

kaṭitaṭapīta dukūlavicitra mayukhatiraskṛta candraruce

praṇatasurāsura maulimaṇisphura daṃśulasannakha candraruce

jitakanakācala maulimadorjita nirbharaku˝jara kumbhakuce

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||16||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Whose life is submerged in colorful silk dresses, the luster of which eclipses the brightness of the moon.

Whose nails pulsate like the brilliance of a gem in a diadem and spread His brightness like a moon, greeted with reverence by Gods and Demons.

Who wins over the mighty heads that are swollen with pride like golden mountains, with the excellence (of power and compassion) that abounds in His bosom similar to a jug.

विजितसहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैक सहस्रकरैकनुते

कृतसुरतारक सङ्गरतारक सङ्गरतारक सूनुसुते ।

सुरथसमाधि समानसमाधि समाधिसमाधि सुजातरते ।

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१७॥

 

vijitasahasrakaraika sahasrakaraika sahasrakaraikanute

kṛtasuratāraka saṅgaratāraka saṅgaratāraka sūnusute |

surathasamādhi samānasamādhi samādhisamādhi sujātarate |

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||17||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Who conquers thousands of enemies who fight against Her thousands of hands thus generating thousands of hands (of devotees) who praise Her.

Who created the savior of the Devas (His son Kartikeya) for the fight with the Demon Tarkasura, and then urged His son for the great battle.

Which is satisfied with both: the devotional contemplation similar to that of King Suratha (of the Devi Mahatmyam) for worldly gains, and the excellent devotional contemplation of Samadhi for spiritual knowledge.

पदकमलं करुणानिलये वरिवस्यति योऽनुदिनं सुशिवे

अयि कमले कमलानिलये कमलानिलयः स कथं न भवेत् ।

तव पदमेव परम्पदमित्यनुशीलयतो मम किं न शिवे

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१८॥

 

padakamalaṃ karuṇānilaye varivasyati yo'nudinaṃ suśive

ayi kamale kamalānilaye kamalānilayaḥ sa kathaṃ na bhavet |

tava padameva parampadamityanuśīlayato mama kiṃ na śive

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||18||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Whoever serves Your propitiatory lotus feet every day, who are the abode of compassion,

(serves) that lotus, which is a abode of Kamala (Goddess Mahalakshmi), will not himself become a abode of Kamala (prosperity) ?

Your feet in fact are the supreme feet (supreme refuge); How can I not practice devotion to them, Oh auspicious Mother?

कनकलसत्कलसिन्धुजलैरनुषिञ्चति तेगुणरङ्गभुवम्

भजति स किं न शचीकुचकुम्भतटीपरिरम्भसुखानुभवम् ।

तव चरणं शरणं करवाणि नतामरवाणि निवासि शिवम्

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥१९॥

 

kanakalasatkalasindhujalairanuṣi˝cati teguṇaraṅgabhuvam

bhajati sa kiṃ na śacīkucakumbhataṭīparirambhasukhānubhavam |

tava caraṇaṃ śaraṇaṃ karavāṇi natāmaravāṇi nivāsi śivam

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||19||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) When a devotee washes the place where your attributes are displayed (places of worship) with river water that is bright as gold and flows smoothly.

Will he not feel the joy of Your all-encompassing Grace contained in Your jug-like (overflowing) breast?

I take refuge on Your feet, Oh Vani (Devi Mahasarasvati) and bow down before You, Oh eternal Vani where all auspices reside.

तव विमलेन्दुकुलं वदनेन्दुमलं सकलं ननु कूलयते

किमु पुरुहूतपुरीन्दु मुखी सुमुखीभिरसौ विमुखीक्रियते ।

मम तु मतं शिवनामधने भवती कृपया किमुत क्रियते

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥२०॥

 

tava vimalendukulaṃ vadanendumalaṃ sakalaṃ nanu kūlayate

kimu puruhūtapurīndu mukhī sumukhībhirasau vimukhīkriyate |

mama tu mataṃ śivanāmadhane bhavatī kṛpayā kimuta kriyate

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||20||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Your moon-like face is home to an immaculate and stainless purity that certainly overcomes all impurities.

Otherwise, why has my mind drifted away from the moon face of beautiful ladies like those in Indra's castle?

In my opinion, how is it possible to discover the treasure of Shiva's name within us without your grace?

Victory to You, destroyer of the demon Mahishasura, who has beautiful locks of hair and who is the daughter of the mountain.

 

 

अयि मयि दीन दयालुतया कृपयैव त्वया भवितव्यमुमे

अयि जगतो जननी कृपयासि यथासि तथानुमितासिरते ।

यदुचितमत्र भवत्युररीकुरुतादुरुतापमपाकुरुते

जय जय हे महिषासुरमर्दिनि रम्यकपर्दिनि शैलसुते ॥२१॥

 

ayi mayi dīna dayālutayā kṛpayaiva tvayā bhavitavyamume

ayi jagato jananī kṛpayāsi yathāsi tathānumitāsirate |

yaducitamatra bhavatyurarīkurutādurutāpamapākurute

jaya jaya he mahiṣāsuramardini ramyakapardini śailasute ||21||

 

(Salutations to the Divine Mother) Grant me Your grace, Oh Mother Uma, who are compassionate with the miserable.

Oh mother of the universe; just as your grace is sprinkled (on devotees), so are your arrows scattered (on enemies).

Please do whatever is appropriate at this time, Oh venerable Mother, to remove my pains and afflictions as they have become difficult for me to bear.
