Ardhanarishvara Stotram

cāmpeyagaurārdhaśarīrakāyai karpūragaurārdhaśarīrakāya |

dhammillakāyai ca jaṭādharāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 1 ||

One half shines golden yellow like the Champa flower and the other half shines with bright white like camphor.

One side of the head is adorned with a beautiful hairstyle and the other carries twisted hair.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

kastūrikākuṅkumacarcitāyai citārajaḥpuñjavicarcitāya |

kṛtasmarāyai vikṛtasmarāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 2 ||

The left half of Ardhanarishvara which is occupied by the Devi is adorned with musk and kumkum. The other half occupied by the Lord is smeared with ash from the funeral pyre. The appearance of the Devi is well decorated and pleasing to the eye, half of the Lord is badly decorated (with ashes, snakes, elephant skin) and it's terrible.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

jhaṇatkvaṇatkaṅkaṇanūpurāyai pādābjarājatphaṇinūpurāya |

hemāṅgadāyai bhujagāṅgadāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 3 ||

The left side of Ardhanarishvara is decorated with beautiful bracelets worn on the wrist and ankle. These emit very pleasant sounds when they move. The right side is decorated with cobra as bracelets. The left side is decorated with gold and the right side with snakes. Such is the marvelous form of the Lord.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

viśālanīlotpalalocanāyai vikāsipaṅkeruhalocanāya |

samekṣaṇāyai viṣamekṣaṇāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 4 ||

From the left side of Ardhanarishvara his eye is long, regular and as beautiful as the Nilotpala flower. While on the right side it has an irregular eye, terrible and unpleasant to see, but radiant like the red lotus flower. Such is the marvelous form of the Lord.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

mandāramālākalitālakāyai kapālamālāṅkitakandharāya |

divyāmbarāyai ca digambarāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 5 ||

The forehead of the Devi is adorned with garlands made of Hibiscus while on the Lord's neck there is a garland made of skulls. She is dressed in regal and divine clothes and He is not wearing clothes (Digambara) He has the sky as a dress.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

ambhodharaśyāmalakuntalāyai taḍitprabhātāmrajaṭādharāya |

nirīśvarāyai nikhileśvarāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 6 ||

The Devi's hair is dark as rain clouds, and the strands of His hair are coppery and radiant like lightning. There is no one who is superior to you and He is the Lord of all. Such is the marvelous form of the Lord.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

prapañcasṛṣṭyunmukhalāsyakāyai samastasaṃhārakatāṇḍavāya |

jagajjananyai jagadekapitre namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 7 ||

She, beautiful and seductive, dances with joy in front of the creation that springs from them. His dance is fury and destruction and the cosmos calms down in them again. She is the mother of this world and He is the father. Such is the wonderful nature of the Lord.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

pradīptaratnojjvalakuṇḍalāyai sphuranmahāpannagabhūṣaṇāya |

śivānvitāyai ca śivānvitāya namaḥ śivāyai ca namaḥ śivāya || 8 ||

The earring of the Devi is bright and studded with precious gems, but the Lord is adorned with a terrifying snake.

She is united with Him and He is united to her in a cosmic embrace. Such is the marvelous form of the Lord.

I bow to Shiva and Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara.

etatpaṭhedaṣṭhakamiṣṭadaṃ yo bhaktyā sa mānyo bhuvi dīrghajīvī |

prāpnoti saubhāgyamanantakālaṃ bhūyātsadā tasya samastasiddhiḥ || 9 ||

This last verse is the Phala Shruti of this Stotram. Those who read this eight-verse Stotram with devotion will see all desires satisfied, honor, a long life and all things propitious for eternity. One who repeats it over and over will achieve all the powers and perfection.

Ardhanārīśvara Stotra (from Śiva Purāṇa)

Brahmā said:—

O lord, be victorious. O Īśvara, O Maheśvara, splendid with attributes, be victorious.

O auspicious goddess, O heroine of Prakṛti and the one beyond Prakṛti and naturally beautiful, be victorious.

O lord of fruitful Māyā, of fruitful will, of great sports and of fruitful strength, be victorious.

O mother of the universe, O goddess identical with the universe, O creator and companion of the universe, be victorious.

Be victorious, O lord of eternal prosperity and permanent abode. Be victorious, O lord of eternal form. Be victorious, O lord of permanent devotees.

Be victorious O creatress, protectress, annihilatress and the heroine of the three Ātmans.

Be victorious, O lord ready to survey, enlarge the universe. Be victorious, O lord from whose terrible glance rises the fire that consumes all the worlds.

Be victorious, O goddess incomprehensible to the gods and others, O goddess that shinest brilliantly with your subtle vision. Be victorious, O goddess the part of the gross Śakti of the Ātman. Be victorious, O goddess pervading the mobile and immobile beings.

Be victorious. O lord merging various principles of the universe into one. Be victorious, O lord the groups of whose followers have stepped on the heads of Asùras.

Be victorious, O goddess affording protection to those who resort to you. Be victorious, O goddess who uproot the spirits of the poisonous tree of worldly existence.

Be victorious, O lord enhancing prosperity, prowess and heroism. Be victorious, O lord, stationed beyond the universe, O lord who hast quelled the might of the enemies.

Be victorious, O immortal lord who hast laid the rite of “five objects.” Be victorious, O goddess having the form of the hymn with the knowledge of the “five objects.”

Be victorious, O lord, the physician par excellence for the great suffering of the terrible worldly existence. Be victorious, O goddess the moon-light for the layers of darkness of ignorance, the primordial dirt.

Be victorious, O black fire that consumed the Tripuras. Be victorious, O goddess Tripurabhairavī. Be victorious, O lord devoid of three attributes. Be victorious O goddess, the possessor of three attributes.

Be victorious, O omniscient one. Be victorious, O goddess enlightening every one. Be victorious O lord having prolific divine limbs. Be victorious, O goddess bestowing all desires.

O lord, where is your great splendour and where the worthless words of ours. Still O lord, forgive me that babble but with devotion.
