Meaning

Yaṃ, Saṃ, Daṃ, Paṃ, Raṃ, Ghaṃ, Kaṃ, Taṃ, Laṃ, Dhūṃ, Ruṃ, Naṃ, Vaṃ, Khaṃ, Caṃ, Maṃ, etc. are all Bija Mantra. Bija means seed, root. It is a very powerful Mantra which usually consists of only one syllable. Bija Mantras evoke particular aspects of nature or the divine, each Devata has their own Bija. The greatest of all Bija is Om or Pranava, as it is the symbol of Para-Brahman. These monosyllabic mantras are also associated with the Chakras and Nadis of our body, whose vibration helps the chakras to awaken.

1.

Oh You who are in the form of a Yaksha (nature spirits, usually benevolent, are the keepers of the natural treasures hidden in the earth, protectors of forests and often depicted as fearsome warriors). Everyone agrees, even your enemies, that you can make the earth tremble. You are the one who puts an end to what has been created.

On your head you wear a crown of braided locks of hair where the Moon (Chandra) resides. You look fierce and your face looks like that of a lion.

You are the one who makes everything last.

Oh You, who takes away our sins, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity (Bhairava Kṣetrapāla).

2.

You are red with anger and you show your sharp teeth like the wild tiger does.

Your screams are like the roar of an animal and are frightening.

You wear the noose of Yama, god of death, and You are that fire that burned the god of love.

Oh You, Divine Body, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

3.

Oh You who playfully intone la la la la with the terrible long tongue.

You are of the color of black smoke, with a large fiery head and of fearful appearance.

You wear a garland of heads and have terrible red eyes.

Oh You, naked beggar, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

4.

Oh You who are swift as the wind, who are compassionate with girls unfit for marriage, You are the essence of Brahma.

You who destroy enemies with sword in hand, You are the destroyer of the three worlds and your fearful aspect shakes the Earth.

Oh You, form of illusion, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

5.

Oh You, who in one hand hold the shell as white as the moonbeam, and grant complete liberation.

Oh You who are the gem of the great Kula clan and who know the secret mantras.

You are the Lord of spirits, and you have fun like a child tickling the armpit.

Oh You, who belong to the intermediate space between Heaven and Earth, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

6.

Oh You, who divide poison with the nectar of immortality with your sword, you are the conqueror of time and death.

You are fast and you are the flame that burns in the cremation grounds.

Your roar sounds like a donkey braying, it burns to ashes and shakes the Earth.

Oh You, who play as a child, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

7.

Oh You who are master of the magical arts and of all the Gunas (virtues - attributes).

You are the deity who grants favors and you are the magic formula pronounced on weapons.

You are the union of Shiva and Vishnu and your eyes are the moon (Chandra), the sun (Surya) and the fire (Agni).

You are the lord of supernatural powers and you always take away the fear of demons.

Oh You, who have the terrible form of Rudra, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

8.

Oh You who ride a swan (Asitāṅga Bhairava) and laugh happily, free, with boisterous laughter.

You are Netrarūpa (lit. the shape of the eye), on your head you wear a crown of braided hair and the planets are enclosed in your hands.

Your legs produce the tam-tam sound, You are the divine child who takes away the pride of the god of love.

Oh You, who are the lord of spirits, who are always strong and who are the fierce guardian deity.

Here ends the Mahākālabhairavāṣṭakaṃ.

I pay homage to the Lord of spirits, my respects to the Lord of death and time, essence of Rudra.

My salutations to the one who is loved by the terrible Kali. My salutations to Bhairava, guardian of the city of Kashi (Varanasi).
